Many fight fans will remember standout welterweight champion Vernon Forrest for his two victories over ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley. Sadly, the American boxer lost his life a number of years back in a brutal murder but this week justice has been served.
The killer of Vernon Forrest is a man called Charmon Sinkfield who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole earlier this week.
The murder took place in 2009 and according to Channel 2 Action News happened as part of a robbery of which Sinkfield was the shooter in the incident.
According to reports prosecutors had requested the death penalty but Forrest’s family did not want it.
From a boxing perspective, Vernon Forrest will never be forgotten. He was a 4-time and 2-weight world champion as a professional and also a decorated amateur, becoming a world silver medallist for the United States in the 1991 world championships in Sydney, Australia.
His final tally as a professional boxer read 43-3-1NC (29KO).
I’ll never forget his two battles with a prime ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosely growing up and marks some of my early memories of American boxing on TV watching from Ireland as a 14 year old kid back in 2002.
