Report: David Haye To Get WBO Heavyweight Title Shot In 2017

Londoner David Haye to get another crack at a version of a world title perhaps sooner than he might of thought.

Haye returned to the sport this year for the first time in over three and a half years off due to injury.

He’s recorded two stoppage victories in 2016 and it now looks like a WBO heavyweight title shot is within touching distance next year.

It has been reported that the WBO heavyweight title recently vacated by Tyson Fury will now be contested by Joseph Parker and Andy Ruiz on December 10th in New Zealand.

Haye (28-2-26KO) is currently ranked no.4 with the World Boxing Organization but Gareth Davies of The Telegraph is reporting that the Englishman has now being placed in line for a shot at the winner of Parker and Ruiz next year.

The heavyweight division just took another plot twist with the always controversial and entertaining David Haye back in the title mix.

Potentially if Haye were to capture the WBO crown next year you could see some massive heavyweight fights taking place in the UK involving him and the likes of IBF champion Anthony Joshua.

Two years ago Anthony Joshua told Sky Sports Haye was a level above him back then – but now the reality of the two coming into each other’s paths could be upon him sooner rather than later:

That’s not to discount the return of Tyson Fury too when he comes back from his current mental health issues. You could have a massive boom in heavyweight boxing in the UK early next year.

Also taking into account the likes of WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder returning from injury in the new year and young contenders like Parker, Ruiz Jr and Hughie Fury and you’ve got one hell of a heavyweight bubbling pot at the moment.

Established contenders like Kubrat Pulev, Luis Ortiz and Alexander Povetkin will also be looking to get in line for title shots, as perhaps will the colourful Shannon Briggs if can keep winning.

The division is coming to life once again with the belts’ fragmentation in widespread effect internationally.

2017 and indeed late 2016 is shaping up to be the beginning of an exciting time for what has been traditionally boxing’s glamour division.
