Dana White on Golovkin: You Make Boxing Fun To Watch Again

Although these high praises are a couple of weeks old from the UFC head honcho, not many from the boxing world picked up on them.

For all the doom and gloom out there for what seems like an eternity surrounding the naysayers on boxing saying the sport is “dead”, the reality is that it is alive and well all around the world – with new pound for pound stars forming and indeed new talented emerging trying to crack into the world title scene.

One of the guys representing this new age for the sweet science is obviously middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin, who’s dynamite fists have torn through the 160lbs division in a fan friendly style in recent years.

UFC head honcho and prominent figure in mixed martial arts Dana White made a good point on this recently:

Congrats @gggboxing you make Boxing fun to watch again!!!! @hboboxing pic.twitter.com/3swOytEDZr

In a time where the two sports (boxing and MMA) compete with one another in more ways than one, the fact that someone in White’s position would actually come out in praise of the sport of boxing and Golovkin, says all you need to know really about the whole ‘boxing is dead’ rehashed and outdated tale.

The UFC have obviously been very successful in recent years in generating excitement and buzz for fight fans and if boxing puts more of a focus on promoting competitive fights, as well as building the fighters’ brands a bit more cleverly, there’s no doubt that this next generation of pugilists will continue to excite fans.

It’s a cyclical business in many respects when you look back at the history of boxing and it’s peaks in popularity in this regard.

With the heavyweight division also creating new stars at the moment like Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, expect next year to be a big time for the sweet science in my opinion.
