Conor McGregor New York Date Confirmed For Madison Square Garden

The Conor McGregor New York fight dream has come through for the Irishman despite recent reports suggesting it was not going to happen.

Earlier this year the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) that is leading organisation for MMA (mixed martial arts) was approved for the first time to hold events in the state of New York.

Straight away thoughts turned to the iconic Madison Square Garden venue as probably being the first big setting for a marquee event, given it’s illustrious history in boxing – host to some legendary fights through the years.

Now McGregor will get his turn at competing at the special venue when he takes on UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 on November 12th.

UFC President Dana White told ESPN that for the first time in the organisation’s history they will allow an active two-weight division champion to retain a belt, in that McGregor will be allowed to hold onto his current featherweight title while also competing for the lightweight strap.

With New York city having such a large Irish community and given the popularity of McGregor both in his home nation and now around the world, no doubt this event will drum up a fair bit of interest on top of the fact it’s the UFC’s first event in New York and with it also being at MSG.

McGregor last competed earlier this year at welterweight in the UFC when he defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 202 via a majority points decision.
