Michael Conlan Professional Debut Confirmed For St Patrick’s Day At MSG

The Michael Conlan professional boxing debut date and venue has been confirmed by his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank.

News broke earlier this week that the highly touted Irish boxer had signed with the Las Vegas promotional stable in a move that made waves on both sides of the pond.

Conlan, who was disgracefully judged in the recent 2016 Rio Olympics that saw his early exit from the tournament which caused widespread outrage, now looks set for big things as a pro with a debut being built-up in the Irish community already in New York:

.@mickconlan11, the pot of gold at the end of the boxing rainbow, will make his pro debut on March 17, 2017 at @TheGarden. #ArumGoBragh

Good ol Bob playing on the Irish charm.

With 35 million plus Irish-Americans living in the US, this makes logical sense to build Conlan this way as well as returning home once a year to his native homeland for one fight there too.

New York boxing can do with a big announcement like this as well in light of recent insurance hikes on combat sports events and with the UFC due to make their debut at Madison Square Garden in the coming months, this is a welcome comeback from boxing at the Garden to keep things competitive in the New York fight business.

Conlan expressed his excitement at the prospect of boxing at the Garden on Twitter not long after the announcement from Arum:

Can’t wait Bob. There you have it people St Paddys day ☘.. Get your flights booked now!! #TeamConlan #Debut #ArumGoBragh #TRBoxing #NYC #MSG https://t.co/Jtyp3jcCEg

It is understood that Conlan will be basing himself in the States for training on a full-time basis in between returning home to Ireland for one fight per year.

Conlan is expected to make his professional debut in the featherweight (126lbs) division.
