Fantasy Fights: Kell Brook vs Canelo Alvarez

Reigning IBF welterweight champion Kell “Special K” Brook recently took a leap of faith, jumping up 13 pounds for a showdown with middleweight destroyer Gennady “GGG” Golovkin September 10, 2016 at the O2 Arena in London, England.

Although Brook produced a valiant effort, he ultimately came up short as his corner threw in the towel to end a vicious beating in the fifth round.

Golovkin retained his WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight titles with his 23rd straight T/KO victory.

Brook will likely drop back down to welterweight in the future in hopes of collecting more world titles, but perhaps we could fantasize about another potential matchup for the British star, and it actually happens to be a fight that has been talked about in the aftermath of “Special K’s” bout with Golovkin.

On his way back down to 147-pounds, Brook could make a pitstop at 154-pounds for a blockbuster clash with lineal middleweight champion and WBO light middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a man many consider to be the face of boxing.

After winning the lineal 160-pound strap with a dominant victory over Miguel Cotto last November and defending it against Amir Khan last May, Alvarez dropped back down to his longtime home at 154-pounds where he scored a TKO victory over Liam Smith this past weekend on HBO pay-per-view (PPV).

The majority of boxing fans have drooled over the idea of a fight between “Canelo” and “GGG”, but it’s unlikely for that fight to take place next, if it ever takes place, which could open the door for a potentially exciting Canelo-Brook fight.

Brook holds solid name value, and his hand speed and pure boxing technique could possibly present an interesting test for the Mexican champion.

“Canelo” would hold the power advantage as he so often does, but the matchup would be unique from a stylistic standpoint nonetheless.

While Alvarez hasn’t had much to say regarding the idea, Brook recently gave his thoughts, telling Sky Sports that he’d love to face Canelo at 154-pounds:

“I think 154lbs would be more my weight class.” Brook said. “I’d love that fight with Canelo. I just want to be in those big fights. I had a taste with the Golovkin fight and the attention around it is exciting for a fighter to be in.”

Although the fight is undoubtedly a possibility, it remains a fantasy as of now, but would you be interested in seeing these two warriors do battle?
