A Star Is Born – Oleksandr Usyk World Champion In 10th Pro Fight

Oleksandr Usyk announced himself onto the professional world boxing stage in some style tonight by beating previously undefeated champion Krzysztof Glowacki to capture the WBO cruiserweight championship of the world.

Oleksandr Usyk won the title by a unanimous decision over 12 rounds in Poland, where the final scorecards read out in favour of the Ukraine man as follows: 117-111, 117-111 and 119-109.

Glowacki who was boxing in his home country of Poland, started the fight in a positive manner looking to take the fight to the challenger Usyk – who proved to be the more capable boxer of the two behind a stiff jab.

As the early rounds went by, Glowwacki had some success in the beginning with his rough house tactics, although Usyk’s speed was causing the champion problems in patches.

As the bout progressed into the mid rounds it became apparent that Usyk was not to be denied his date with destiny and a world title in only his 10th professional fight.

The Olympic Gold medallist showed his pedigree despite the lack of professional experience, landing eye catching counter punches at times in the mid rounds while also utilising superior footwork and boxing ability.

(Some of Usyk’s highlights to date via Haymaker YouTube):

As the fight came down the stretch champion Glowacki looked tired as the better accuracy from Usyk began to really take over, who was boxing and moving well to keep out of harms way for the most part, despite a slip in the final round.

Usyk came into the fight with a reputation as a big puncher, which he is, but also showed that he’s the full package with his boxing skills tonight and really fulfilled his potential.

No doubt a star was born in boxing tonight.

With the win, 29 year old southpaw Usyk as well as capturing the world title improved his record 10-0 (9KO) and likely set up a unification fight next with WBC champion Tony Bellew from the UK.

Considering the fight was broadcast on British television on Sky Sports, if I were a betting man, I suspect that wasn’t by accident and they wanted to give fight fans a taste of what’s to come before the Bellew fight in terms of showcasing Usyk to the British and Irish audience.
