An Andre Ward vs Gennady Golovkin fight was in the works for some time claims the American, who is currently gearing up for the biggest challenge of his career against Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev.

In many ways it would represent the acid test for the destructive Golovkin, who has been relentless in his obliteration of the middleweight division thus far.
Fight fans have asked for some time though how he might fair if he moved up a division to super-middleweight (168lbs) – would his power carry up? Would he be the force he is there that he is at 160lbs? How would his punch resistance do?
These are all questions that American boxing maestro Andre Ward could certainly ask, although the chances of Ward fighting again at super-middleweight might be slim, with him now in the light-heavyweight division (175lbs) currently preparing for a considerable challenge in division knockout artist Sergey Kovalev in November.
Speaking in an open media talk this weekend, Ward has said that the fight was put to Golovkin and his team but they didn’t want it in his view:
“The fight was offered, 50-50. Every detail was 50-50 and we made a conscious decision as a team to make him a 50-50 offer just so there was no wiggle room.”
Ward told the media that he had email proof of the fifty-fifty offer been made by his team to Golovkin’s representatives, but he didn’t want to get into actually showing the email as he didn’t think it was that serious.
It’s unlikely the fight will happen in the future at this point but never say never, as Ward certainly has the ability to make the super-middleweight limit still one would imagine and if Golovkin’s star continues to grow and Ward manages to beat Kovalev, perhaps talk of this fight will build once again next year.
