Boxing promoter Oscar De La Hoya has promised fans that the Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin will not end up like the long drawn out process that Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao did.
De La Hoya, a hall of fame fighter now turned promoter and head honcho of Golden Boy Promotions was making reference to the amount of time that the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight took to make in the past.
Comparisons have started to be made with Canelo vs Golovkin however in recent times from fans who have grown impatient at not been given the fight they want, when they want it.
A Golovkin vs Canelo battle sits probably near the top of most fight fans wish lists in terms of desired bouts but as of yet, it has eluded the public for boxing political reasons – it would seem.
The fight is anticipated by many to take place in the fall of 2017 around this time next year (September) but that’s a long time away for most fans, which understandably has caused some frustration.
Speaking to Radio Raheem of Seconds Out this week, Oscar De La Hoya assured fans that the fight will happen as soon as possible:
“I have my plan of when I’m going to stage that fight and when it happens, it’s going to happen. Look, I can easily say that this fight (Golovkin vs Canelo) is not going to take six to eight years to make the way Pacquiao vs Mayweather was made. But this is going to happen very soon, actually relatively soon.”
How soon though is the question.
Boxing fans will hope at the very latest in the fall of next year the fight will be made, but will also be predicated on both men needing to stay unbeaten of course which is never a guarantee in boxing.
It has been mooted that Golovkin will need to face one of his mandatory challengers next up in Daniel Jacobs, although the only way he might be able to get out of this is by facing WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders in a unification, which has also been spoken about.
Canelo faces WBO super-welterweight champion Liam Smith tonight in Dallas, Texas and provided he wins, he will likely have another fight at the very least in between any potential fall 2017 showdown with ‘GGG’.
