Last Saturday GGG scored a TKO in the 5th round against a gamed Kell Brook. You have to wonder what the second half of the fight would have been if Brook didn’t have a fractured orbital bone though.
Coming into this fight this appeared to be a horrible mismatch, on paper.
GGG had destroyed all comers at middleweight, well those who would fight him at least. So what would happen to a welterweight moving up two divisions?
You guessed it. It seemed like career suicide.
However, with effective movement and good combinations Kell Brook gave GGG problems early on into the bout that not many expected.
This caused an out of character Golovkin to throw wild shots, hell bent on trying to overpower Brook with brute force.
Brook’s left uppercut landed impressively at times:

Another impressive feat was how well Brook was able to take GGG’s power.
Even though Golovkin didn’t look impressive as he usually does, this could actually turn out to be a blessing in disguise for boxing fans.
Middleweight fighters Danny Jacobs, Billy Joe Saunders and Chris Eubank Jr have all expressed interest in fighting Golovkin next.
More than likely, since Jacobs is the mandatory for GGG’s WBA title at the moment, that fight will happen next but then again, this is boxing, and anything can happen if the price is right.
After that fight last weekend Saunders is the next logical opponent in my opinion because he has the one title that GGG doesn’t actually own at middleweight (WBO).
Then Eubank may get his shot, before the fall showdown with Canelo (in an ideal world). Both teams have a verbal agreement for September 2017 by all accounts so lets see how it plays out.
Technical flaws like head movement and susceptibility to combinations and uppercuts could be keys to dethroning Golovkin going forward, as shown by Kell Brook in spells early on in their fight.
The middleweight division is shaping up for a massive next twelve months if some of the top names square off. Roll on.
