Chael Sonnen Reveals Untold Floyd Mayweather Story in Oregon
Former UFC star Chael Sonnen has revealed an entertaining behind the scenes story about renowned boxer Floyd Mayweather before he became massively famous.
Chael Sonnen has always been an interesting character for those familiar with UFC but for those not, he is a former world title challenger in the UFC turned colour commentator who now works in the media given his candidly entertaining personality.
He’s worked for the likes of Fox Sports, ESPN and now holds his own podcast called ‘You’re welcome!’. Having listened to the podcast on more than one occasion, I can vouch that it’s well worth a listen.
He gets into in the below story about how Mayweather behaved in the dressing room one time in a bout in Orgeon (where Sonnen is from) when Sonnen had been working for the Athletic commission in the State one night, supervising hand wrapping and the like.
Towards the end of the below video he also details some of Mayweather’s humour, genuine sense of humour and how he is actually one of the good guys off camera behind the scenes, that not many see or know about because of the whole ‘Money’ mantra that the general public got used to when he made it big.
To this end, I can also genuinely speak on that after myself and a friend of mine from Ireland many years ago before I ever got into boxing writing, were granted access to the Mayweather gym one sunny afternoon in August when he was getting ready for the Victor Ortiz fight.
As two out of place Irish tourists, we were treated with nothing but respect and were the only guys given access to the gym that day outside of the usual circle and the HBO 24/7 camera that were filming at the time.
Before we play Sonnen’s story on Mayweather, I must point out, one part of it was a inaccurate from Chael, in that Floyd never fought Kostya Tszyu when he makes reference to it.
He probably was just mixing that opponent up with one of Mayeather’s uncle and former trainer Roger Mayweather’s adversaries, when in fact Roger fought Tszyu in 1995.
Anyhow, here is Sonnen’s full behind the scene story on Floyd Mayweather:
