Irish Boxer Running Riot On Hilarious Banter Campaign At Rio Olympics

To those not familiar with Irish boxer Paddy Barnes outside of his considerable boxing skills, he’s also got a flair for cheeky banter which has come across in typical Irish humour at the start of the Rio Olympics.

Barnes from Belfast was also Ireland’s torch bearer at the start of the opening ceremony in the 2016 Olympics and has been in full flow ever since landing in Rio.

From inside sources in Rio representing Ireland in a different sport at this year’s games, we understand that colourful character Paddy has been proudly sporting his Irish coloured boxer briefs on his balcony in the Olympic village, drying off in view of the other teams.

This banter has continued over the past couple of days when Barnes cooked up a social media storm on Twitter, following a selfie posted with golfer Rory McIlroy’s ex-fiance:

The Irish boxing team was surrounded by some controversy in recent days coming into the games, following the alleged anti-doping violations of one of it’s team members.

Paddy however, is keeping things light in the Irish boxing team at the moment – calling for a team meeting yesterday in this creative attire:

But the fun will be temporarily coming to an end soon for the likeable Irishman, as the business end of why he’s in Rio unfolds in the coming days.

The two-time Olympic bronze medallist (2008 and 2012) competes in the men’s light-flyweight category tomorrow (Monday August 8th, 15:00 GMT) in the last 16.

Barnes is being tipped by many as one of Ireland’s leading medal hopes and with an extensive and successful amateur career built up to date, he certainly has the experience to deliver.

Outside of his Olympic accomplishment Barnes is also a European and (two-time) Commonwealth gold medallist but from a banter point of view alone, if you are looking for any twitter account to follow this Olympics – we highly suggest checking out @paddyb_ireland.
