WBA Strips Ruslan Chagaev of his Version of Heavyweight Title

WBA strips Ruslan Chagaev of WBA (regular) heavyweight title after allegedly failing to pay sanctioning fees.

Chagaev (32-3-1-21KO) last fought in March when he was defeated inside the distance for the title by Australian Lucas Browne, after which he was then awarded the title back following post-fight complications surrounding alleged drug test allegations against Browne.

Since then Chagaev has not fought and according to an excerpt on the WBA official website from author Robert Ecksel, he has been stripped of the title because:

“The deadline for receiving said fees was July 14, 2016, and the WBA received no such payment. As a result, Chagaev and his promoter are in breach of WBA rules and subject to sanction, including, but not limited to, removal of recognition and authorization to participate in WBA sanctioned bouts.”

At 37 years of age it will be interesting to see where southpaw Chagaev will go from here, particularly given the fact the heavyweight division is thriving worldwide once again.
