Canelo Alvarez’s Promoter and head of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya gave his side of why the the Golovkin vs Canelo fight didn’t happen today at a press conference in the UK.
The press conference De La Hoya was attending today was instead for Canelo’s (47-1-1-33KO) upcoming match where he will challenge Liverpool’s Liam Smith (23-0-1-13KO) for the WBO super-welterweight title at the AT&T Stadium in Texas on September 17th.
Many earlier in the year had expected that Canelo would next face Golovkin at middleweight after Canelo’s emphatic win over Amir Khan.
But it wasn’t meant to be for this year at least. Speaking on what happened in negotiations at today’s UK press conference for Canelo vs Smith – Oscar De La Hoya said:
“Canelo Alvarez fought Amir Khan at 155lbs and Canelo Alvarez is a junior-middleweight, that’s the bottom line. Just like his past fights when he challenged Austin Trout, when he challenged Erislandy Lara and Floyd Mayweather, Canelo always wants to fight the very best and our decision was to fight the very best champion at 154lbs.”
He addded:
“Yes I did call his (Golovkin’s) people the next day (after the Khan fight). It didn’t go very far for some reason, and it wasn’t our fault, but we made the move and decided to fight the very best champion at 154lbs because you have to realise here, is that Canelo Alvarez is moving down only one pound. That’s it. He’s a natural 154 pounder so we went after the best junior-middleweight champion in Liam Smith.”
