Unbeaten KO specialist Nick Webb (6-0) will be looking for his seventh straight win against the No.2 ranked heavyweight in the Czech Republic Tomas Mrazek this Saturday night at the Tolworth Recreation Centre in Surrey.
From nearby Chertsey, Webb has demolished all of his first five opponents in the opening round, adding up to less than six minutes of ring-time.
His latest victory on the undercard of Haye Day II saw the 28-year-old taken the distance for the first time, winning 40-36 on points against Hari Miles (10-9) at The O2 on May 21st, live on freeview channel Dave.
A former ABA champion, ‘Wild’ Webb is storming his way through the pro ranks, guided by former world heavyweight title contender Scott Welch in his Brighton gym.
Boxing News & Views caught up with the ‘Demolition Man’ just days before his seventh pro bout on Saturday 16th July.
How has the training camp been for this fight?
“I feel stronger and better for this one. My preparation is always good but I just feel stronger at my weight. Sparring been going well, been tightening up with a few southpaws in the gym. We’ve got a good team in the gym. Where I’m in second year as a pro now, we’ve learnt from mistakes and it’s more on point now.”
What do you know of your opponent?
“I’m looking forward to the fight, he’s about the same height and weight as me but he’s a southpaw; I had a southpaw in my last fight and I just wanted to tighten up a few things and wanted a southpaw for that experience again.
Because he’s a southpaw, he’ll be awkward, but we don’t get paid for overtime so if you can get them out then get them out.”
What was it like fighting at the O2 Arena on such a big show?
“It was incredible! I don’t think I took all in until the next day because I was all hyped up for the fight. Jose Mourinho watched my fight at ringside and Fatman Scoop came to see me to congratulate me in the dressing rooms after the fight; it was mental!”
Hari Miles became the first man to take you the distance, were you glad to finally get some rounds in?
“Being a heavyweight, you always want the knockout but I’m happy to get those rounds in so mentally I know I can go the distance and win on points and box, or stop them, so I’m eventually going to be the full package.”
What feedback have you had about your last fight against Hari Miles?
“Everyone liked seeing me in a good fight and really enjoyed the show. I’m a work in progress and still coming through. I got the experience in and I don’t think many up and coming fighters would fight someone like him.”
What’s next for you?
“My main goal is to reach 10-0 by the end of this year, a Southern Area title fight could be on the cards at the end of this year, I don’t see why not. Hopefully, keep winning and then the English title this time next year.”
Just how exciting is the heavyweight division right now?
“There’s so much around, domestically it’s good and obviously world level is, too. There’s no better place to be in boxing at the moment. This time next year I want to be in the mix with all those guys.”
