The ‘Krusher’ returns to his native Russia today when he puts his light-heavyweight titles on the line against Issac Chilemba.
One of the most feared boxers on the planet will put his explosive fists on display once again but it will mark the first time he’s fought in Russia since a tragic night in 2011 – that saw his opponent lose his life three days after their fight.
Not only that, but Kovalev will also return to the exact same venue where that particular fight happened, so one would imagine it will be a difficult time for him in many respects.
His opponent today Issac Chilemba is a solid 175lbs fighter but in all honesty, should not be a match for Kovalev if the Russian is on form and also who’s looking to fight American boxing star Andre Ward in November should he win today.
Chilemba has been vocal about Kovalev looking past him for Ward in the build-up to this one, with Kovalev remaining his usual quietly confident and focused self in the run-up.
Ahead of the fight, the folks at HBO’s YouTube Channel (credit) have released an excellent new Sergey Kovalev greatest hits video ahead of what many are tipping will be a dominant display later today in Russia.
