The world of boxing has been on the global sports agenda this week with the news that professional fighters will now be able to compete at this year’s Rio Olympics.
The overall reaction to the change in rules has been largely criticised by those in the boxing world, although some pro fighters have already suggested they would be interested in fighting at the Olympics, with Britain’s Amir Khan saying he would love to represent Pakistan.
However, the first man it seems to really step up to the plate and commit to trying to qualify appears to be middleweight Hassan N’Dam, who has told the French media that he intends on taking part in next month’s qualifying event in Venezuela – where there will be apparently 26 spots for this year’s games up for grabs.
The United States have come out and said they will not be sending any professional boxers to the Olympics on their team, however no comment has been made yet from N’Dam’s country, Cameroon, on what their stance is.
Hassan will be remembered by many for his two world title challenges, one against David Lemieux and the other in a thriller against Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin in which there was an incredible 6 knockdowns:
