Manny Pacquiao it would appear was approached with an offer from representatives of this year’s Olympics to compete as a boxer in the tournament.
Recently the WBC (World Boxing Council) came out with a short but very clear statement on social media stating that any professional fighter found to be competing in the Olympics would face a two year ban.
WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said to the Standard that Pacquiao was a “breath of fresh air” for turning down their offer and went on to say:
”It is embarrassing to see how the amateur authorities lower themselves, still trying to justify their offer to the great Manny Pacquiao to represent the great boxing country of the Philippines, stating that they have not won a medal since 1996 in Atlanta.”
It is understood that Pacquiao is currently concentrating his efforts on his political duties in his native country of the Philippines.
The ‘Pacman’ (58-6-2-38KO) last appeared in a boxing ring in April of this year, when he comprehensively beat Tim Bradley via unanimous decision in their third meeting to win the vacant WBO international welterweight title.
