Amid the current backdrop of calls for Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin to reach a deal that will finally see them step in the ring against one another, Floyd Mayweather has flipped the script the tad versus the current perception from the masses on what is going on with the negotiations.
Since Canelo Alvarez vacated his WBC middleweight title recently, which then prompted the WBC to award the belt almost instantaneously to Gennady Golovkin, there was a perception created among many fans that Canelo could be trying to dodge fighting Golovkin.
When questioned about what he thought of Canelo’s WBC belt vacating from Elie Seckbach of ES News – Mayweather said he thinks the opposite is true and questioned why GGG doesn’t fight in other weight classes:
“We’ve yet to see triple G move up in weight classes. So when it’s all said and done, when we’re talking about cherry picking, I think it’s really triple G that’s cherry picking. I think he never called out Andre Ward, he’s ducking and dodging Andre Ward. That’s a man that he would never call out.”
He added:
“So I think he should move up to 168lbs and move up to light-heavyweight and see what he can do. I went from 130lbs to 135lbs to 140lbs, to 147lbs, to 154lbs – and I wasn’t even a 154 pounder.”
Speaking in an interview with Radio Rahim of Max Boxing a couple of years ago, even then, Ward was convinced that Golovkin would never want to fight him:
