It's not very often that you come across this level of combat sports news in your typical working day as a boxing journalist, but this one, well, it could be big. UFC star Conor McGregor and former pound for pound boxing great Floyd Mayweather have previously traded words with one another on social networks in the past, but it appears…
McGregor Mayweather Fight Talks Appear To Be Legit
After the story initially broke via the Sun newspaper in the UK, many had doubts about it’s validity. Well, as the days continue to go by, the story appears gain more and more credibility.
The key question really for me comes down to what the UFC would want to do, and also, does McGregor really want to take on Mayweather in a boxing match?
If it were a fight under boxing rules there’s no denying McGregor would get absolutely murdered.
Likewise, if such a mythical ‘MMA vs Boxing’ bout were to take place under mixed martial arts rules, Mayweather would likely be taken down to the ground within seconds and beaten to a bloody pulp.
You don’t have to look too far in the past to see what happens in this scenario, when Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture famously beat down James ‘Lights Out’ Toney inside the octagon, under MMA rules.
Both Mayweather and McGregor in recent days have stoked the flames on this particular fire, with Mayweather saying that a fight with McGregor is “possible” and McGregor himself posting this piece of graphic design on social media yesterday:
This hype is all well and good, but the UFC are inevitably going to have the final say on this matter, who McGregor presumably – is under contract with.
A sensational story undeniably. Time will tell if it comes to fruition however.
