Golovkin returns to action this weekend against unbeaten American Dominic Wade.
Although there has been little buzz this week in the fight business ahead of one of boxing’s most exciting knockout artists’ latest fights, perhaps largely due to UFC star Conor McGregor’s massive social media eruption, middleweight boxing kingpin Gennady Golovkin still appears to be in his usual relaxed and happy form ahead of what inevitably proves to be a ferocious display in the ring, more often than not.
With Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan’s showdown for the WBC middleweight title coming up in a couple of weeks time, Golovkin has been battered with questions surrounding a much clamored for unification between him and the young champion from Mexico, Canelo.
Speaking to Fight Hype ahead of his latest defense this weekend, when asked about whether or not he would consider dropping down in weight to fight Canelo at a catchweight below the 160lbs limit like he would do for a potential Mayweather match, ‘GGG’ said:
“I’m ready to fight anybody. Canelo is not Floyd – Canelo is not Floyd.”
If Canelo wins his upcoming fight with Amir Khan he will have no choice but to then face Golovkin in a unification, or else risk losing his belt due to mandatory obligations.
A fight between Golovkin and Mayweather seems unrealistic certainly for the near future, with Mayweather apparently very happy in retirement as things stand.
