Amir Khan Bulking Up Big Time For Canelo – Will He Lose His Speed?

Amir Khan’s clash with Canelo Alvarez next month at Las Vegas’ new T-Mobile Arena is one of the biggest fights in US boxing this year so far, but how competitive will it really be?

I’ve long been a fan of Khan’s fan-friendly fighting style, bravery for looking to take on the best and when he wants to use them, his boxing skills.

The school of thought going into the Canelo fight is that his best weapon against his much physically stronger Mexican counterpart will be his speed.

But recent video released yesterday from Fight Hype shows Khan (above in picture) to be really building himself up to the 155lbs limit for his WBC middleweight clash, perhaps overly so in some people’s opinion.

There’s no denying the hardcore training Khan is putting himself through to achieve these results in such a short time frame but in my view, it could be to his detriment.

His speed and lateral movement could be majorly hampered as a result and even if he starts out boxing well and wins the early rounds, will his stamina be the same down the stretch if the fight goes into the championship rounds – with the additional muscle mass that he will be carrying?

At some point during the course of the fight, you’d imagine he will have to engage Canelo and when that time comes, his punch resistance and ability to throw down with a physically bigger man will also come into question.

Maybe he’ll prove everyone wrong though and manage to avoid Canelo for a full twelve rounds to win a decision. I just can’t see it happening.

Credit to him for taking this enormous risk however, in what will no doubt be an exciting bout to watch.
