The Philadelphia boxing great has his doubts that a proposed light-heavyweight fight between division kingpin Sergey Kovalev and newly moved up 175lbs fighter Andre Ward will take place this year.

Ward will move up to the full 175lbs light-heavyweight limit for the first time as a professional at the end of this month, when he takes on Cuban Sullivan Barrera.
However, according to widespread reports there is apparently a deal in place that will then see Sergey ‘Krusher’ Kovalev take on Ward near the end of 2016, should Ward win against Barrera.
Speaking in an interview with Fight Hype this week, fellow light-heavyweight Bernard Hopkins has cast doubts on that scenario happening:
“I don’t see that happening, one or two fights from now. I just think that I would love to see it as a fan but as a business guy and it’s business, I’d say wait a minute, this man’s been on a roll (Kovalev) since fighting Hopkins. Why would I throw Andre Ward in a situation without at least getting a few fights under his belt. If they are wise, they will try to milk it as long as they can.”
Hopkins is expected himself to soon make an announcement relating to who his own next opponent will be, with widespread speculation existing that it will be his last appearance in a professional boxing ring later this year.
