Watch: Virgil Hunter Breaks Down Mayweather Pad Work In Brilliant Short Clip

Renowned trainer Virgil Hunter who coaches fighters such as Andre Ward and Amir Khan knows a thing or two about mitt work suffice to say, but it turns out he also has an almost encyclopedic understanding of perhaps some of the best pad work ever to grace boxing, the Roger Mayweather – Floyd Mayweather pad work routine.

________________________________________________________________________________

Mayweather who is currently retired (although many expect him to return) for years had developed a very unique routine when getting ready for his fights with his uncle and trainer Roger, where the two would work the pads with an almost unrivaled understanding of where each other were at every moment, with perfect timing of combinations.

The rhythm between the two on the mitts over the years became quite the sight to behold, particularly as Mayweather built up his undefeated record and ultimately his pound for pound number one status in boxing.

Hunter has come up with an intriguing theory as to how the pad work actually worked and what it was designed to do in the below short film study put together this year by Fight Film Studies, which also featured an interview Hunter did with ES News.

Hunter’s next big fight with one of his own charges comes next week when Andre Ward fights Sullivan Barrera at light-heavyweight, but for the meantime, enjoy this top class analysis from a man who knows his boxing as well as anyone on the planet:
