IBF and now WBA super-bantamweight champion Carl Frampton is riding high following his win over long time rival Scott Quigg at the weekend, but a certain Cuban is very much looming. Make no mistake, Carl Frampton vs Guillermo Rigondeaux would be a fantastic fight for fans, and the 122lbs division as a whole.

Frampton improved his unblemished record to 22-0 (14KO) at the weekend following his split decision points victory over Bury man Quigg, although many had Belfast’s ‘Jackal’ winning the fight more comfortably by three or four rounds.
While the fight may have been underwhelming to some fans, Frampton did display excellent ring control, boxing skills and towards the end of the bout (particularly in the final round) plenty of heart.
But following on from the win, questions from some spectators turned to how he would match up with the weight classes’ universally recognised king, Guillermo Rigondeaux.
It doesn’t appear that ‘Rigo’ (16-0-10KO) is on the immediate agenda for Frampton, mind you the Cuban must first get passed his upcoming test in the UK against James Dickens in Liverpool, before anything could be discussed anyway.
Frampton conveyed as much with his calling out of featherweight WBA titlist Leo Santa Cruz yesterday, who won his fight in the USA with an emphatic TKO win over former Frampton victim Kiko Martinez at the weekend:
On another twitter related note at the weekend, Rigondeaux was quick to fire some verbal punches Frampton’s way after his win over Quigg on Saturday:
If Frampton were to move up a weight to 126lbs in the summer and challenge for Santa Cruz’s (32-0-1-18KO) strap, it would be interesting to see would he come back down to 122lbs to then fight Rigo, should he emerge with a win.
A clash would likely do good business given Rigondeaux’s familiarity to Irish fans following an appearance he had in Dublin a few years back when he stopped Willie Casey with a body punch, coupled with his upcoming UK exposure in Liverpool against Dickens, and his overall appeal to many hardcore boxing fans the world over, the fight would do very well (one would have thought).
Will it happen in 2016? Perhaps not this summer, but certainly later in the year there’s no logical reason why it isn’t possible.
