The news of Mayweather Promotions forming a partnership with the UK’s Matchroom Sport headed by Eddie Hearn comes as British boxing continues to ride the crest of a wave with numerous current world champions.

In an unexpected turn of events, it has emerged that legendary boxer Floyd Mayweather and renowned UK boxing promoter Eddie Hearn will be joining forces in an exciting cross Atlantic boxing promotional pact.

Floyd Mayweather’s promotional company Mayweather Promotions have hooked up with Hearn’s Matchroom Sport in a partnership that will reportedly see Mayweather’s fighters fight some of Hearn’s current stable of professional boxers.

Speaking to Gareth A Davies of The Telegraph, Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, said:

“Floyd Mayweather and Mayweather Promotions have formed a partnership with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sport to hold a series of fights in the UK matching our guys against his guys – and other fights – and we have had some great discussions. We are looking to implement this as soon as possible. The timing is right.”

It seems that a retired Mayweather now wants his promotional company to go to the next level and branch out overseas, with the partnership with Matchroom allowing for such.

It will be interesting to see if former Mayweather manager and adviser (during his active boxing career) Al Haymon will follow suit later in the year with his Premier Boxing Champions TV series in America, in terms of perhaps bringing it to the UK.

Haymon is very well acquainted with Hearn, having already taking a part handling in the career of current Matchroom fighters such as James De Gale, so this might not be too far fetched a notion.

It is also understood from today’s news that Mayweather’s expansion to the UK could even see him apply for an official promoter’s license with the British Boxing Board of Control at some stage in the near future.
