Unbeaten Heavyweight Nick Webb Says Sparring With Chisora Has Him Ready For Friday

Unbeaten heavyweight Nick Webb (3-0-0) will take on Bulgarian, Angel Angelov (2-2-0) at the Brighton Metropole Hotel on February 12th, hoping a victory will provide a small step towards the Southern Area title.

The Surrey-born fighter, who trains at Scott Welch’s Brighton and Hove Gym, has so far won all of his fights by knockout, each within the first two minutes of the opening bell.

Notably, his first professional contest saw him KO Hrvoje Kisicek in just 56 seconds, around four times quicker than a certain headline-grabbing Anthony Joshua managed when he faced the Croatian back in 2013.

Webb seemed relaxed and intent on carrying his good form into his upcoming bout with Angelov when he spoke exclusively to Boxing News & Views.

How have preparations for this fight gone?

“They’ve gone good. I’m the fittest I’ve ever been; strongest I’ve ever been. I’ve been sparring well, I’ve sparred with Chisora and everything’s been going really well. I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been for a fight so it’s all good.”

What was sparring with Dereck Chisora like for you and is that something you’ve done before?

“It was good. I think when you spar with a guy like Chisora, because he’s a pressure fighter, fitness-wise you can go with anyone if you can spar like that. I’ve sparred him a few times now, of all the heavyweights I’ve sparred with he’s probably the most well-known.”

Will we see anything different in this performance to what we have seen in your previous three fights?

“I’m going to try and be more relaxed and let it flow a bit better, I keep going out there just thinking I wanna’ go through them. Obviously I want to do the same but just more relaxed this time.”

What are your plans for the next three months?

“I’m trying to get out again in March and try and fight as regularly as I can. So I’ll get this one done, one in March and then build my record up. I want to get to 10-0 by the end of the year, at least. The Southern Area title is definitely something I’m looking to fight for this year, at some point.”

Dominic Akinlade holds the Southern Area title at the moment, he fought Angelov last, beating him in the second round. If you were to beat Angelov quicker than Akinlade did, do you think that will stand you in good stead?

“It would look good wouldn’t it? It will let him know that I’m coming for him!”

Are you expecting a big crowd on Friday?

“Yeah I am. I train in Brighton so I know a lot of people from there who will come down, my family and friends will be there as well so it should be a good night.”
