This week has seen one or two stories come out of left field in the boxing world and today’s Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan fight announcement is definitely one of them. A great bit of news indeed for fight fans.

The boxing world can really surprise you every now and then, with the out of the blew fights that can often get made without even a murmuring or even slight leak at times. No one saw a Canelo Alvarez and Amir Khan fight coming, two athletes in the prime (or very close to) in their respective sporting careers.

These are the type of fights that fans want to see, packed full of genuine excitement and intrigue. Big respect must surely be given to Khan for moving up so much weight, and taking on a considerable challenge.

The news broke on both fighter’s Twitter accounts today:

Recent months had seen plenty of speculation on a potential Amir Khan vs Kell Brook fight and a Canelo Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin bout.

Even though those two fights may have to wait while, this is certainly a very good alternative to both (for the time being at least), and something that just no one saw coming.

The world of boxing has taken to the news very positively so far:
