Sergey Kovalev exacted a one side pounding on Jean Pascal in their second fight, with Pascal’s trainer Freddie Roach stopping the fight at the end of the seventh round.

They had fought a year previously when Kovalev stopped Pascal in the 8th round of another one sided affair, but this fight was more punishing, as Kovalev really broke Pascal up from start to finish.

Kovalev established his dominance right off the bat, dropping Pascal with a jab in the very first round only for it to be ruled a slip (replays showed later that Pascal did touch down).

As the fight proceeded, Kovalev’s superior physical and technical gifts became blatently obvious, punishing Pascal with vicious right hands for the most part, with a vastly superior punch output to the challenger, who was trying to land one big shot at a time.

Punch stats via Compubox at the end of the night showed the following:

                              KOVALEV                                 PASCAL

Thrown                       412                                            108

Landed                       165                                             30

Percent                       40%                                           28%

Pascal training under Freddie Roach for the first time, had threats from Roach that the fight would be stopped if he continued to go on the ropes and absorb so much punishment. These threats became reality at the end of the 7th round when Roach compassionately pulled his fighter out.

Kovalev (29-0-1, 26KO) has a late 2016 fight with Andre Ward apparently penciled in, but first he must take another fight (as will Ward) which could hopefully come against Adonis Stevenson, who as it turns out, stormed the ring last night during Kovalev’s post-fight interview.
