Welsh Boxer Who Was Once Shot In The Face Now On The Rise In Pro Ranks

Boxing isn’t all about the big name stars fighting for world titles in Las Vegas, it’s also about the comeback stories, the fighters who defy the odds, who refuse to lay down and surrender.

Welsh super-welterweight Jamie Weetch (27) has had a tough journey in life, however things are now on the up for him in his boxing career with five wins on the bounce and on February 12th, he’ll have his tenth professional fight in Australia.

Originally from Pontywaun in Wales, Jamie was a highly talented amateur fighter, starting boxing when he was 15 at the Cwmcarn ABC, then going on to win the Welsh welterweight title at 17 years of age, also capturing a bronze medal that same year at the GB’s.

Then, at the age of 18, a horrific life moment came for a young Weetch, when he was attacked by a gang of thugs, resulting in him getting stabbed in the neck and brutally beaten in the head with kettle bells.

He was forced to take a year out from boxing while recovering from his injuries but then sadly, at the age of 19, things were to get even worst.

He stood up to the same gang of thugs later that year, only to get viciously shot in the face for doing so, and needed to get pellets removed from his shoulder, neck, ear and also had to have his nose operated on.

He was told there would be a very slim chance he’d ever fight again, with him been lucky to escape with his life.

But in true boxer fashion, he showed the huge courage that many of these unique athletes often possess, and made a comeback after a period of fighting on the unlicensed UK boxing scene.

This comeback came after he moved to Australia at the age of 24 and began his professional boxing career down under, fighting between 154lbs and 168lbs thus far (including a win of the 168 Western Australia State title) but as things stand now he is looking to stay at the 154lbs limit from here on out.

As a fighter he’s a come forward, aggressive boxer with an entertaining style and to date he’s 7-2 as a pro, although his two losses have only come on points and on both occasions were highly debatable.

He’s now many years removed from his horrific attack and shooting that he had to endure, but the future is looking bright for him finally, with a great team around him.

A remarkable comeback story, undeniably.

Watch this space in the coming years and particularly over the coming 12 months, as he looks to make a big statement in the world of professional boxing.
