Olympic Gold Medalist Howard Davis Jr Dies Aged 59

The world of boxing has been hit with tragic news of one of its favorite fighting sons passing, just ahead of the new year turning over to 2016.

Howard Davis Jr won Olympic Gold for the United States at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and was voted the best boxer of the games at the time, an incredibly prestigious award given the fact he pipped substantial competition to the post to win it in 76, that included the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard and Michael Spinks.

He would later turn professional and fight for the world title on once occasion, losing out to Scotland’s Jim Watt. Howard Davis Jr is regarded by many as being among some of the fastest boxers of all time, such was his blistering hand speed.

The sudden and sad news of his passing came to light earlier today when Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports reported that Howard’s brother had confirmed the sad news had come after a short battle with cancer.

Everyone at Boxing News and Views would like to pass on our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Howard Davis Jr.
