The new heavyweight champion of the world didn’t win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in the end, nor did he place anywhere in the top three, but he did deliver some respectful words that earned a round of applause when on stage with host Gary Lineker. The Tyson Fury apology is below.

The winner of the prestigious award on the night went to tennis star Andy Murray. However the final results show that Tyson Fury did very well, just missing out on a podium spot:

When Tyson’s turn came for his brief video synopsis relating to his nomination, highlighting his exceptional achievement in Germany last month when he dethroned longtime heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, the big man from Manchester then took to stage to say a few words with host Gary Lineker.

Despite a petition before the awards ceremony that sought to have Fury removed from the show entirely for controversial comments made in an interview with Oliver Holt of the Daily Mail, BBC rightly decided Fury would not be removed due to freedom of speech.

When questioned by Lineker regarding on things he has said since the fight that has called a fallout subsequent to his big win in Dusseldorf, Tyson replied:

“If I’ve said anything in the past that’s hurt anybody I apologise to anybody who’s been hurt out there, it’s not my intention to do that.”
