Yvan Mendy showed little respect for British Olympic Gold medalist Luke Campbell in a highly competitive fight, that saw the Englishman knocked down for the first time in his career and lose a decision for the WBC international lightweight title.

It was a very good start from Frenchman Mendy, who came forward well with unorthodox shots from different angles, with some good body work in the early rounds.

The first three rounds were very close, and Mendy showed good defense with tight forearms to deflect some of Campbell’s early work. Mendy landed some decent jabs and right hands on the young Yorkshire man who realized early on that he was in a real fight.

The fifth round saw the biggest crisis of Campbell’s career, when he hit the deck in dramatic fashion via a flush left hook on the chin that landed cleanly. He rose to his feet and survived the round, in what proved to be the first time he tasted the canvas as an amateur or pro.

The proceeding rounds Campbell came back but at times but was still being beaten to the jab by Mendy, who just kept coming and pushing the pace, undeterred by Campbell’s shots.

The ninth round finally brought about a slight slowing down of Mendy who wasn’t as zealous as previously, with Campbell landing some decent shots and cheered on by the crowd.

Campbell finished strong with a good work rate down the stretch but it wasn’t to be enough, as he lost eventually via a split decision to the deserved victor Mendy.
