If you like back and forth boxing battles, last night’s toe to toe light-heavyweight slugfest between Andrzej Fonfara and Nathan Cleverly certainly would have satisfied your appetite.

The fight went down in Chicago, Illinois, on the latest addition of Premier Boxing Champions.

The end result was a twelve round unanimous decision for the pre-fight favourite Fonfara, but the real story of the night had a bit more to it than that.

Going into the contest, many doubted former champion Cleverly’s ability to still compete at this type of world class level.

How wrong they were.

The fight broke all records in the 175lbs division for punch output, with a sickening combined total of 2525 punches thrown between them, as measured by Compubox.

A startling stat for light-heavyweights.

The fight’s maniacal pace and intensity illustrated the genuine will to win by both men right the way through, with barely a moment to catch a breath.

A contest that perhaps was a little closer than the scorecards unanimously suggested for Fonfara in the end, but nonetheless – a genuine thriller for fans.

Although Cleverly lost, the case for his stocks increasing after such a breath taking spectacle for boxing fans can certainly be made.

His heart and determination was quite incredible, battling with what looked to be a broken nose suffered in the mid rounds, to a torn ear after that, right the way until the final bell.

Fonfara moves on to what inevitably could be a title shot very soon. A remarkably fit boxer, and genuine world class fighter.
