Selby Defends IBF Title Via Points Win Over Tricky Montiel

Lee ‘The Welsh Mayweather’ Selby had hoped to make his American debut a sensational one, but experienced and cagey Mexican Fernando Montiel had other plans last night in Phoenix, Arizona on the latest installment of Premier Boxing Champions.

Former multiple-weight world champion Montiel proved to be a rather sticky bit of opposition for IBF Welsh world champion Selby, although the final scorecards may not have reflected as much.

They read out 119-109, 118-110 and 116-112 in unanimous favour of the champion.

The truth of the fight however, was a little bit different. Selby certainly won the fight but was made to work extremely hard for it, against a man with plenty of experience.

Montiel (age 36) was a difficult target to hit for the majority of the bout, who displayed the ring craft that only a veteran would have, along with some surprising pop on his punches at times.

Surprising, as Montiel had originally come from flyweight and was giving away considerable size against IBF featherweight champ Selby, who at times he connected with some right hands that certainly got the respect of the Welshman.

Selby however did the bulk of the work in the fight and connected with some great right hands of his own and on the whole, did enough to get the win.

Selby will walk away from the fight a much better champion, with some invaluable experience gained on his international travels against a very tricky customer.
