Barry McGuigan Predicts Small Hall Classic For Cummings-Meli

Unbeaten middleweight duo Conrad Cummings and Alfredo Meli will risk their perfect records on November 20 in a mouth-watering Celtic title clash. Cyclone Promotions’ All on the Line show at the Waterfront Hall will offer their man Cummings a chance to step up in class and punch a path to British and Commonwealth honours.

Speaking exclusively to Boxing News and Views, promoter Barry McGuigan envisages a potential small hall classic.

“The bigger the fights, the bigger the performances. Conrad’s ready to show what he’s capable of,” said McGuigan.

“We’ve been honing his technique and creating more space in the ring. We are working up to the longer distances because once you can do 10 rounds then you can do 12 and then you’re ready for big fights.”

Currently sporting a 7-0 record with three knockouts Cummings has been doing much of his work on big Carl Frampton undercards and this is a chance to strike out alone and claim headliner status. On June 20, 2014 Marc McCullough raised the roof in a barnburner with Martin Parlagi on Cyclone’s Waterfront Brawl show.

They now return to the Belfast venue with 11-0 (3 KOs) former amateur standout Alfredo Meli looking to extend his own impressive slate and steal the glory. A busy southpaw fighting out of the Immaculata gym, Meli has been building his name at smaller venues but is ready for the challenge.

“Conrad loves southpaws and he fights better against them,” warned Barry. “He hits really hard and handles himself against top fighters in the gym too. We were ecstatic with his sparring against Andy Lee and Billy Joe Saunders, a world champion and European champion no less.”

McGuigan believes that his man is only a couple of fights away from tackling the likes of Nick Blackwell (reigning British champion), John Ryder and Cork puncher Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan.

“We will be targeting the Commonwealth and British titles soon but it’s about Meli first. This has the makings of a small hall classic. There will be a whole host of local guys on the show and we will name them in due course. Paul Hyland Jnr is definitely confirmed.”
