Settling an old score
Margate boxer Ricky Leach (0-4-1) is scheduled to fight on November 28th at Medway Park in Gillingham but after being taunted by rival Darren Pryce (0-9-2), he has opted to travel to Newport in Wales on October 10th to settle the score.
There has been bad blood between the warring pair after they hit a deadlock in their previous encounter on Ricky Leach’s debut at the York Hall in April last year on a Miranda Carter promoted show.
The super-bantamweight from Thanet commented on the cause of the argument, “It was one of his mates that started it by mouthing me off on Twitter, saying that Darren’s gonna’ knock me out and I retaliated and then Darren got involved.”
Since his pro debut against his former foe Pryce on April 27th 2014 at the York Hall in London, scored at 38-38, Leach has travelled all over the UK as the away fighter.
Grudge match
However, after hooking up with new manager Joe Elfidh and his promotional outfit JE Promotions, the 25-year-old boldly decided to go back to being a ticket seller again on November 28th at Medway Park in Kent.
He explained, “He asked for the fight and I didn’t want to take it because I wanted to be the home fighter again for the November 28th fight but my manager said that they are really keen and that I could still fight in November as well, so after that I said, ‘let’s take it!’
“This is a grudge match and I’ll be going in there looking to really hurt him. He got knocked out by Matthew Chanda and I went the full four rounds with him.”
Despite not wanting to fight on the road anymore, the 118-pounder from the South East Coast of England feels confident ahead of the rematch although conceding the home advantage.
“I’ve got to go down to him in Newport so I’ve got fight him in his own area and I have heard that Wales is hard place to get a decision in.
“I’m going in there with the mentality of a home fighter to get the win. Last time, his scruffy style of boxing spoiled my work and I couldn’t get my shots off. Everyone said that I’d won it and even I knew that I’d won it.”
Boxing clever
Leach believes that his boxing ability will be enough to win the contest to settle the unfinished business, 18 months after their initial encounter.
“I’m just going to box,” he clarified. “He’ll come in all guns blazing but I’ll just move and use my skill because I’ve got more skills than he has so I’ll use them to my advantage.”
Of his dream as being the home fighter, he concluded, “I’m still boxing in November no matter what happens in this next fight so I’ll take this as a warm up fight to get me fully prepared for the November one.”
The main event of the Newport Centre show sees unbeaten 22-year-old Mitch Buckland (9-0) vying for the vacant Celtic light-welterweight title against 24-year-old Ally Black (5-1).
The pair met just a few months ago on American Independence Day and Cardiff boxer Buckland emerged as the victor with a fourth round stoppage over the previously unbeaten Scot.
The last time that Buckland performed at the Newpoint Centre, he bagged his first title in the lightweight version of the Celtic strap back in September 2013 against Craig Woodruff (5-1).
Dale Evans (10-2-2) enters into a six-rounder in preparation for his British welterweight title eliminator against former English and Commonwealth champion John O’Donnell (29-2) on November 7th at London’s York Hall.
Light-middleweight Bradley Pryce (35-20), local lad Jerome Samuels (5-7), Kyle King (4-3), light-heavyweight James Todd (3-2-1), unbeaten 23-year-old Zack Davies, and 34-year-old debutant Alan Lamb from Barry are also in action on the night.
