It was in slightly disappointing circumstances due to an early injury to his opponent Jose Zepeda but nonetheless, Terry Flanagan won’t be complaining, far from it – as the new WBO 135 lbs world champion.

On Saturday night Mancunian Terry Flanagan became the first Englishman ever to win a legitimate lightweight world title.

“Turbo” as he’s known, won in rather unusual fashion through no fault of his own, when his opponent Jose Zepeda was forced to withdraw from the contest in the 2nd round.

It was unfortunate, as the fight looked like it was starting to come to life nicely, with the battle of the two southpaws shaping up to be a possible firework starter.

Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, when the referee decided that the shoulder injury sustained by Zepeda was in fact caused by a punch he had thrown – and not one he had taken.

Consequently, the rules of the WBO legislated for the referee to have the power to stop the fight and award the winner as Flanagan.

The 26 year old Flanagan, the now WBO lightweight champion of the world, will have options a plenty going forward, with a potential all UK clash with Londonder Kevin Mitchell likely to be a match up fans will be calling for.
