It was a relatively straight forward win for the talented Jamaican Nicholas Walters, in what was in spells, an entertaining featherweight affair.

The big controversy coming into the fight was relating to what took place at Friday’s weigh-ins. It’s well known that Nicholas Walters is a big featherweight, but his inability to make weight reared it’s once head again.

So much so, that after two failed attempts at making the 126 lbs limit, he lost his WBA world title on the scales on Friday, with only his opponent Marriaga having a chance to win the title on the night.

This wasn’t to be however, despite some good spells from the young Columbian, who showed plenty of game and grit at times.

Walters used punishing body punches throughout the fight that looked painful, slowing down the challenge of Marriaga as the fight progressed with solid left hooks.

Marriaga landed some nice right hands in the early stages of the fight however, letting Walters know that he was certainly no mug.

That been said, Walters displayed a steely professionalism throughout the contest, upping the ante as the rounds went by.

In the ninth round, Walters put the Columbian on the seat of his pants for the first time in his career with a sharp counter right hand.

A good view of the perfectly timed shot can be seen here in HBO’s short post-fight video highlights:

Walters closed out the show with the busier work and higher percentage of punches landed. In truth, Marriaga was just physically and technically outmatched by a bigger man.

Apparently Walters weighed in at over 20 pounds over the featherweight limit on the night, putting into perspective the size and strength disadvantage Marriaga would have been at.

The final scorecards read 118-109, 117-110 and 119-108 all in favor of Nicholas Walters.

The question will be after this, is Walters going to move up in weight? As he clearly has major issues fitting into the 126 lbs limit.
