Scott Quigg Set To Take On Kiko Martinez
It’s not Carl Frampton next, but Kiko Martinez is certainly a good consolation prize for fight fans.
According to the latest boxing news, Scott Quigg is set to defend his WBA super bantamweight title against big hitting former champion Kiko Martinez on July 18th, at the Phones 4U Arena in Manchester.
The news may come as a slight disappointment to boxing fans who were eagerly awaiting a Carl Frampton vs Scott Quigg showdown, but Spaniard Martinez will certainly provide an excellent alternative opponent.
He will surely prove to be a big measuring stick for Quigg, for those who have said the Englishman has yet to prove himself at world level.
Martinez represents the biggest challenge of Quigg’s career to date, no doubt about it in my opinion.
If he were to get past Martinez in decent fashion, it would only make a potential Frampton showdown even bigger for later in the year.
Martinez showed against Frampton late last year that he was still an awesome force in the division. Despite losing his IBF title to “The Jackal” in Belfast, he put in one hell of a shift that night, that left Frampton physically sore afterwards.
Having been at the fight live and for the previous occasion when he lost to Frampton in Belfast, that Kiko looked like one of the best Kiko’s I’ve ever seen to be honest. As good, if not better as the time he knocked out former Irish boxing great Bernard Dunne.
If he were to come in against Quigg in that condition, in that mindset, he’d present a very real threat to Quigg’s WBA title. The question will be can Quigg step it up when posed with a fighter that dangerous, on genuine world level?
He very well could but only Scott will be able to answer that.
The Frampton vs Quigg fight will happen eventually, we’ll just have to be patient a little longer.
If the two fighter’s recent banter is anything to go by on Twitter, they certainly want the fight. Lets just hope boxing politics can be put aside for their next round of negotiations, provided both champions get through their next fights of course.
Although no official confirmation has yet come from Quigg or Matchroom, good sources in the boxing business expect it to be Kiko Martinez next for the man from Bury.
Its an intriguing fight for me, that will answer a lot of questions about Scott Quigg being at world level or not. In many ways, his acid test.
