PADDY BARNES AND MICHAEL CONLAN LOOK TO CONTINUE GOOD FORM IN WSB

By Jack W McCarron

It’s week 7 of the World Series of Boxing and Irish eyes will be trained on Kazakhstan tonight as the Astana Arlans host Paddy Barnes, Michael Conlan and the Italia Thunder. Both were successful on 3-0 score lines in week 5 as Thunder travelled to Konin, Poland to take on Rafako Hussars.

Barnes is currently ranked as the number 1light flyweight in the competition, while Conlan is the number 2 ranked bantamweight. The Italia Thunder currently sit in 3rd place in group B and have Barnes and Conlan to thank for it with the Olympic medallists picking up 15 and 10 points respectively.

Tonight sees Barnes take on Temirtas Zhussupov while Conlan steps into the ring with World Amateur bronze medallist Kairat Yeraliyev in what is sure to be a cracking encounter.

Both men can expect a tough night in Almaty as the Astana Arlans remain one of only two unbeaten teams going into week 6, the Cuba Domadores being the other.

STRONG DEBUT

Last night in London’s York Hall, Galway super heavyweight Gary Sweeney came out on top in his bout with British Lionheart’s Jitaru Ionut-Mirel winning on points.

Sweeney fighting on the Mexico Gurrerro’s team will have been more than happy with his night’s work, in what was his first bout of the current WSB season.

Ballymena man Steven Donnelly is not in action this weekend for the Rafako Hussars Poland, however he picked up his teams only win of the night in week 6 beating Brian Ceballo of the USA Knockouts on points in Miami. Donnelly has picked up 10 points from his 3 bouts to date and is ranked at number 3 on the welterweight list.

GOING FOR GOLD

Finally Portlaoise Middleweight Michael O’Reilly guaranteed himself at least a silver medal yesterday in the prestigious Strandja Memorial Tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria after winning a split decision in his semi-final yesterday.

He will face Beketimir Melikuziev of Uzbekistan in tomorrow’s decider in what is Europe’s oldest boxing tournament. Previous winners of this tournament include world champions Amir Khan, Kubrat Pulev and Alexander Povetkin.
