Carl Froch 2015 Return Now Targeted For Summer
By Cam Gillon
A 2014 TO REMEMBER
British super middleweight world champion Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) has been forced out of a speculated spring clash with Mexican star Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Las Vegas due to sustaining an elbow injury in his training camp. Froch who turned 37 in July, has not been in the boxing ring since brutally knocking out long time rival George Groves in front of a packed eighty thousand crowd inside Wembley Stadium in May 2014. The fight was the biggest sell out bout in British boxing history and smashed all pay per view records for a domestic fight.
Froch has been dreaming of fighting in the capital of boxing in Vegas for around 18 months now and a potential bout with Chavez was close to being finalized before Froch picked up the injury. Froch was hoping his promoter Eddie Hearn from Matchroom Sport was going to make a announcement very soon for the bout to take place in March which of course is now off the table.
“I’m disappointed to have let this opportunity go but at this stage in my career I have to make every fight count” Froch said.
THE CHAVEZ SAGA
Chavez and his side have shown interest in making the fight happen but it has taken more time than expected due to Chavez’ contract issue with former promoter Bob Arum from Top Rank. Chavez got out of that contract and signed to Al Haymon in the end of 2014 and that signaled the fight with the IBF super middleweight champion Froch would finally get the go ahead.
For the fans, the fight between Froch and Chavez would be filled with action, both Froch and Chavez have slugger styles and aren’t afraid to take a punch and both can deliver a lot of power. Chavez has not been in the ring for almost a year now since his victory over Brian Vera and is looking for a big fight at super middleweight after moving up from middleweight. Chavez would also like to fight Carl Froch and Gennady Golovkin in 2015, according to recent reports.
Last night on Twitter, Froch posted a picture of boxing gloves hung up with the caption ‘Something nice about this picture’ which sparked major online rumours that he was ready to retire from the sport. It is unknown at this time whether Froch meant it or was doing it out of disappointment of getting injured and forced out of the fight.
AN INCREDIBLE BOXING RESUME
Froch has had a wonderful career picking up magical wins over Mikkel Kessler, Jean Pascal, Lucian Bute, Jermaine Taylor, Arthur Abraham and Andre Dirrell. Froch’s only losses came against Mikkel Kessler in 2010, which he avenged in 2013 in his home town of Nottingham and losing the super six classic final to American Andre Ward in 2011. Froch doesn’t feel a rematch with Ward would benefit his career unless it was in the UK. Ward has still yet to fight outside of the States so that fight likely won’t take place.
It is likely now we will see the Carl Froch 2015 ring return sometime this summer.
