Jason Quigley Pro Debut Set For July 12th

It has been announced last night that young Irish boxing sensation Jason Quigley will officially make his professional debut under Golden Boy Promotions on July 12 at none other than the world famous – MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The 22 year old Donegal native will box against an opponent to be confirmed but it will more than likely be in a 4 round contest. His fight will be part of a huge American bill that will be headlined by Canelo Alvarez who takes on the Cuban Erislandy Lara. This is tremendous news for Irish boxing that one of our rising stars will be competing in the sport’s premier stage in the States at the MGM, on such a card in only his first pro contest.

His Boxing Story Thus Far

After winning Gold at middleweight in the European Amateur Championships last year and then going in to become the first Irish man ever to win Silver at the World Amateur Championships, this boy certainly has the pedigree and boxing background anyway.

Trained by his father Conor, the father son connection could follow suit from a long line of successful paternal boxing partnerships in recent years. Quigley technically and physically could well have the attributes necessary to develop into a very well rounded middleweight contender and at 22 has the world at his feet.

The fact that Golden Boy signed him alone speaks volumes I feel and also the fact they are willing to put him on such a big stage on his debut reverberates their solid belief in him even more, in my opinion.

He has certainly picked a competitive division to embark on his pro journey within. 160 lbs at the minute is absolutely on fire with quality champions currently reigning and a long list of hungry challengers nipping at their heals.

After watching a feature on Jason and his father during the week the thing that impressed me straight off the bat was his down to Earth demeanor and passion for the game. He talked about how Marco Antonio Barrera inspired him as a boy to become a boxer and that he owes his father everything for making it as far as he has in his career to date.

He’ll need that good attitude and passion for the game without doubt if he is to make it one day as a champion. I think he can though. He’s got all the amatuer pedigree on his side along with tremendous technical competence and a solid middleweight frame.

I for one can’t wait to watch his career unfold and will be watching the Jason Quigley pro debut with interest on July 12th. Jason Quigley, maybe one day Ireland’s next boxing golden boy!
