Golovkin vs Stevens – Will the Terrorising Power of GGG Strike Again?

Big time boxing returns to the Big Apple this weekend when world middleweight crusher Gennady Golovkin puts his WBA and IBO titles on the line against New York native Curtis Stevens at Madison Square Garden. I’m really looking forward to this one, Golovkin is a special talent!
If I’m honest thought he broke my heart a bit in his last fight when he demolished my fellow country man Matthew Macklin inside of 2 brutal rounds. After the fight Matt said that GGG was by far the best fighter he had ever shared the ring with which was high praise from a fellow peer of the calibre of Macklin.
Golovkin has always had that pedigree or “pure grade” if you will, since his amateur days when he won gold for Kazakhstan in the world amateur championships in 2003 and then winning the silver at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Since then he has obviously turned pro and gone on this mad run of devastating knock out wins and still remains unbeaten today at 27-0-24KOs.
The scary thing is about him is as the competition has been slowly increased fight by fight he seems to be punching even harder and becoming more cynical about his work, fight by fight. His last 14 fights in a row have all ended up with his opponent been either rendered unconscious violently or just unable to continue with the referee mercifully saving his opponent. This man is a bit of a phenom to be honest.
Standing in the way this weekend is the often brash and outspoken but certainly dangerous Curtis Stevens. Stevens is known to punch a bit himself and comes into the fight off the back of some good wins. Stylistically speaking though I just can’t see him giving GGG too much trouble in this one. GGG will have both a height and reach advantage and with Steven’s warrior spirit and willingness to come forward and engage, I can only see this one ending in one way with him walking onto some hurtful and vicious shots.
GGG inside 4 for me in what should be an entertaining fight while it lasts in what could potentially be a precursor for bigger things to come for him in terms of a unification fight with one of the other champions, or even a step up to the 168 lbs limit of super middleweight to challenge one of the titlists there.
Also keep an eye out for a real 50/50 and very tasty undefeated heavyweight match up on the under card between the super talented and undefeated Cuban Mike Perez (19-0, 12KOs) and the also undefeated Russian southpaw knock out artist Magomed Abdusalamov (18-0, 18KOs), this one is to close to call for me but should be areal Halloween treat for fight fans!
