The Future is Bright for Dereck Delboy Chisora after KO Win of Gerber

By Jeremy O’Connell

Dereck Chisora continued his career resurgence at the weekend with a dominant 5th round knockout of faltering German-based Kazakh prospect Edmund Gerber to win the vacant European Heavyweight title.

What does his future hold? Certainly, fans of his have reason to be optimistic. He weighed 235lbs., a career lightest by 5lbs., and a full 26lbs. lighter than he was in his limp defeat to Tyson Fury.

The EBU website states that the winner of the fight has to face the mandatory challenger in his next contest, but a perusal of the EBU’s Heavyweight ratings makes it unclear who is the current mandatory.

Kubrat Pulev is ranked in the top spot, but he is not interested in fighting for the European title anymore, as he awaits his upcoming mandatory world title shot at Wladimir Klischko.

Robert Helenius (who himself ‘won’ the European title a couple of years ago against Chisora, who dominated the fight only to be robbed in one of the worst decisions of recent years) is also rated highly and could be named mandatory.
The likes of Alexander Dimitrenko, Francesco Pianeta, Albert Sosnowski, Richard Towers (if he can get past Lucas Browne in his upcoming fight), and Andrzej Wawrzyk would seem to be attractive options down the line, all of them being very beatable European, rather than world, level fighters, and each with a degree of name recognition.

The ultimate goal for Chisora is of course another world title shot. He put forward a spirited effort when challenging Vitali Klitschko last year, so the goal would be a fight with his brother, Wladimir. There is already a pre-existing feud in place – Chisora spat water into Wladimir’s face during the ring introductions for the Vitali fight, and he slapped Vitali at the weigh-in – and the fight would be very marketable in both the UK and Germany.

I am confident that, with the right matchmaking, the man from Finchley will get another crack at a world title in the next 12-18 months.
