2013 Boxing Schedule - Start of September

By Peter Wells

With a new season of boxing beginning, I’ll be taking a look at the big fights we can look forward to in the rest of 2013. From the expected classics to the pound-for-pound showdown’s, they will all be previewed here over the next few weeks, enjoy:

7th September – Ricky Burns-Raymundo Beltran

WBO Lightweight champion Burns makes the third defence of his title when he faces Beltran. Burns will be looking to improve on his last fight where he was behind on the cards to Jose Gonzalez when the challenger pulled out with a wrist injury.

Beltran has experienced more than his fair share of ups and downs, defeats to Ammeth Diaz and Sharif Bogere have been accommodated by impressive wins against Hank Lundy and Ji-Hoon Kim. There seems little room to doubt that Beltran is in the richest vein of form of his career.

Burns is still a very big Lightweight and with faster hands and smarter skills Beltran is in for a tough night. Gonzalez may have exposed Burns last time out, but Beltran does not possess the same arsenal that Gonzalez had.

Prediction: Burns W UD

7th September- Seth Mitchell-Chris Arreola

This is beyond doubt a critical fight for American Heavyweight boxing, with Seth Mitchell’s suspect chin still in serious doubt, fellow American Arreola could put a full stop to the former American Footballer’s Heavyweight dream.

In 2 thrilling rounds, Mitchell was unexpectedly stopped by Johnathan Banks, before winning the rematch in June despite being hurt early on. Banks then went into a shell leaving Mitchell to rack up the points and take a wide points victory.

Arreola is coming off the back of a convincing defeat to Bermane Stiverne, but will be desperate to score a victory that could lead him to a possible 2nd shot at world glory. First time around he was dominated and stopped in 10 by Vitali Klitschko.

Although Arreola can be outboxed he does pack a decent punch, and with Mitchell’s chin showing signs of faltering everytime a shot lands on it, there is certainly concern that he will go down once Arreola lands.

Prediction: Arreola TKO 5

14th September- Kid Galahad-Jazza Dickens

Sadly it just doesn’t seem often enough that the top domestic fighters square off, but from now until the years end, British boxing is delivering big-time. To kick off the match-ups between Britain’s best is Kid Galahad’s showdown with Jazza Dickens for the vacant British Super Bantamweight title.

Galahad has impressed thus far in his career on Channel 5 against a blend of British foes and tough overseas fighters. 3 stoppage wins in a row and prior to that a one-sided victory against Jason Booth.

Dickens may not have had the expose but he sure has been putting in the rounds. 10-0 Jon Fernandes took Jazza the 10 round distance when Dickens won the vacant English Super Bantamweight title.

Both will understandable be feeling confident, but this contest will ultimately come down to who has the right style to beat the other. While Dickens can box well, he so far hasn’t shown he can pack a punch, while Galahad’s quick hands and slick defence have captured the public’s imagination.

Prediction: Galahad W UD

That’s it for part 1, but don’t forget to look for part 2 next week, where I look ahead at ‘The One’. You can follow Peter Wells on Twitter, @boxingsaddler.
