A Look Ahead To Action Involving Irish and British Boxers This Weekend

By Niall Doran

Starting with action in the Emerald Isle this weekend, professional boxing returns to our shores with a great card up in Dundalk, Co.Louth. On the card you have Limerick favourite Willie ‘Big Bang’ Casey back fighting for the first time since his points win over Jason Booth last summer. Also on the card is now established pro Anthony Fitzgerald who fought in Belfast only 3 weeks ago against Andy Lee. Fitzgerald gave a very spirited and impressive display against the former world title challenger on that occasion. Hopefully Anthony can build on this great performance and look impressive this weekend with a good win. On the under card in Dundalk there are some terrific Irish prospects in action with names like Anthony Cacace and Phil Sutcliffe Jr, the latter making his professional debut!

Heading over the water to the UK, there is a great card taking place at the Wembley Arena this Saturday. George Groves fresh from his split with Frank Warren will box for the first time on a Matchroom promotion and will be shown on Sky for the first time since his clash with James De Gale. He squares off against a tough Argentinian but I’d expect this to be a fight he should get through comfortably enough (can’t see the opponent being too good considering they gave him a weeks notice). Also on the card Lee Purdy defends his IBF international welterweight title against Cosme Rivera. Topping the bill is Darren Barker who squares off against tricky Italian Simone Rotolo. Rotolo has very few knockouts in his record and might prove slippery for a while, but I’d expect Barker to look good in this one.

Another mention must go to one of Ireland’s brightest professional prospects who is in action stateside this weekend. Dublin Light Welterweight Jamie Kavanagh (trained by Freddie Roach) is back in action on Friday night in California when he takes on Salvidor Garcia. The unbeaten Irishman will be looking to extend his unbeaten record of 12-0 and move forward with his ambitions of getting a shot one day at the world title!
