In a fight that most fans and experts seem to be unanimous in their opinion’s of the outcome, I can’t help but feel a lot of people are counting Rees totally out.
Don’t get me wrong I think Broner will win the fight (and more than likely by stoppage) but after watching their press conference this week I felt Broner really could be underestimating the pedigree of Rees. After all Gavin Rees is a former world champion and has an outstanding record of 39-1-1 (19kos). He was also world champion at Light Welterweight, (a weight above that of which he fights Broner on Saturday) so he is used to mixing with physically stronger opponents, at least on paper. These factors coupled with the Rees appearing to be in fantastic, career best condition, have to be taken into account.
Broner on the other hand has been a cut above all opposition that has been put in his way so far. To become a two weight world champion at the age of 23 clearly demonstrates he is a special fighter. Along with this accomplishment and the manner in which he has dispatched his opponents thus far has been breath taking to say the least. He seems to have a very similar style to Floyd Mayweather in regards to how he uses his shoulders to deflect blows as a means of defense and spins out of this position to unleash punishing counter punches. In his last bout against De Marco he was perhaps at his most impressive to date, dissecting the much bigger man in a cold & calculated fashion.
Without doubt I think the hype train surrounding Broner is justified but make no mistake he has a long way to go to become the new Floyd Mayweather. The one thing I like about Broner as opposed to Mayweather is that he has more concussive punching power which is conveyed in his chilling record so far of 25-0(21kos).
In relation to the fight on Saturday night, if I were a betting man I would pick Broner for a late stoppage (maybe rounds 10, 11 or 12) as I think Rees will bravely hang in there in what could be a fairly vicious and violent beating. I hope I am proved wrong however, and will be hoping the tough Welshman can pull of an upset in what would be one of the biggest upsets in boxing over the last 10 years.
Rees will definitely bring his all, and this mixed with the class of Broner should result in an entertaining encounter between these two very different pugilist specialists on Saturday evening.
