RICH BOXING HISTORY

When you think back about some of the legendary fighters that have come out of Mexico down through the years and about Mexican boxing history and tradition in general, it’s impressive to say the least.

When it comes to great Mexican fighters the list goes on and on: Chavez, Barrera, Morales, Marquez, Ricardo Lopez, Salvidor Sanchez, De La Hoya (Mexican/American), etc.

Year after year, decade after decade, generation after generation, Mexico churns out more top class fighters than anywhere else in the world.  The one thing they all seem to have in common is heart, guts and an almost super human amount of determination.

IN THE BLOOD

I heard a commentator mention recently it seems like all Mexican fighters have a great chin, you never see a glass jawed Mexican. I couldn’t agree more. I think the reason for this goes back to their determination. From a young age a lot of these fighters seem to have a steely determination and resolve bread into them. A will to win and a never give up attitude, no matter what. Whenever I watch a fight between two Mexicans I know I’m going to be watching a proper fight, a quality battle.

When you look at a lot of fighters that come out of Mexico a lot of their stories are similar from boxers around the world. Usually they come from deprived areas or a working class background and dream of one day making it big and becoming  world champion to escape poverty. This background is common to boxers around the world, but there’s just something that makes the Mexicans that extra bit special, that extra bit tougher. What is it though?

MEXICAN PRIDE

Maybe it’s the great pride taken by Mexican’s in their heritage dating back to their early history. Maybe it’s just a part of life for a lot of young men to box as boxing is  a family tradition and a way of life. I would say a lot of it has to do with Mexican history. You only have to look at the rivalry that still exists today between Mexico and Puerto Rico  whenever two of their top boxers collide (Cotto v Margarito recently). Of the modern day Mexican contingent you have top fighters like Juan Manuel Marquez, Brandon Rios (Mexican/American) and Canelo Alvarez who carrying on this national boxing love affair.

Whatever the Mexicans are doing they are certainly doing something right to keep cranking out these top level pugilist specialists who love a toe to toe war.  Long my this fantastic tradition last.

Viva La Mexico!
