A look ahead to this weekend’s action – Gavin, Golovkin and Garcia

By Niall Doran

The boxing new year is well and truly underway this weekend. In the UK British Welterweight Champion Frankie Gavin (14-0, 10Ko’s) returns with a bout against Jason Welborn. Gavin looked impressive in his last outing against Junior Witter, comfortably winning a decision in what was always going to be a scrappy affair against Witter.

Frankie’s career has had a few stumbling blocks since he turned pro with issues of making weight being a recurring theme throughout his career. He is now 14-0 as a pro and 2013 potentially could be a big year for him. He had always had great pedigree since becoming Britain’s first ever World Amateur Boxing champion back in 2007. Since then he has gone through a few trainers and I really think 2013 is the year that Frankie should get rid of his old ‘fun time franky’ image and knuckle down. I don’t see any issues with him getting past Jason Welborn and after that he should be looking  to step up in class.

Elsewhere in the US there is a real barnstormer potentially in Madison Square Garden with WBO Featherweight Champ Mexican Orlando Salido defending against number one contender Mexican/American Mikey Garcia (30-0 26 Ko’s). The 32 year old Salido has notable wins over Juan Manuel Lopez and his losses have only come from the likes of top operators such as Yuris Gamboa and Juan Manuel Marquez (2004). Mikey Garcia will be all guns blazing for this one. Has potential for a classic Mexican tear up written all over it.

Also  on the bill WBA and IBO Middleweight Champ Gennadiy Golovkin from Kazakhstan defends against American Gabriel Rosado. I don’t see too many problems for Golovkin here and look for him to improve on his current record of 24-0 (21Ko’s).
